I am interested in creating narratives derived from contemplations on the collective human psyche with ceramic sculptures. I blur the line between bodily representations and ceramic material by meshing fragmented body parts with daily objects such as furniture, home appliances, and machinery. These ambiguous forms sway between the presentation of familiar and unfamiliar images of the body to foster a sense of eeriness.
To emphasize the physicality of the sculptural forms, I use hand-building techniques with clay, which creates imperfect structures and subtle impressions of my hands on the clay’s surface. The imperfections of the hand-building process mirror the imperfections of humanity and the fallibility of our own physical forms.
My goal is to convey an uncanny feeling to the viewers by incorporating contradictory elements in my sculptures, such as distorted forms of the body, colorful surfaces, and unexpected titles. I gauge the dynamics of these elements to produce a spectrum of discomfort, aiming to question societal norms of sanity and humanity.
